NARRATIVE TEXT

..Narrative Text, is a text whose contents is a story or a story about something.

Examples :

• animal story (fable) 

  

• legend (legend)

  

• short stories (short story)

• and the like. 

The characteristics of narrative text:

1.Generic Structure:

a.Orientation

b.Complication

c.Resolution

d.reorientation

2.Narrative Grammatical features using “past tense"

3.Frequent use of conjunctive time (temporal conjunction), for example: once upon a time, one day, long time ago,etc.

4.Social function : to entartain the reader/listener

 

 Generic Structure

•Orientation: provides an introduction to the characters, place and time of the story (who or what, when and where)

•Complication: Contains the height of the conflict / problem in the story. Complication A story may have more than one.

•Resolution: Problem solving. Could end up with joy (happy ending) could also end up with sadness (sad ending).

•Reorientation containing contents inference while the ending .

  Example:

Why do hawk always hunt the chiks?

     

     Once upon a time, a hawk fell in love with a hen. the hawk flew down from the sky and asked the hen, " Will you marry me?". ( Orientation )

     The hen loved the brave, strong hawk and wished to marry him. But she said, " I cannot fly as high you can., if you give me time, may I learn to fly as high as you ?. then we can fly together.“ ( Compilication )

    The hawk agreed. Before he went away, he gave the hen ring. "this is to show that you have promised to marry me," said  the hawk. ( Resolution )

           It so happened that the hen already promised to marry the rooster. So, when the rooster saw the ring, he became very angry. "throw that ring away at once?" shouted the rooster. the hen was so fightened at the rooster's anger that she threw away the ring immediately. (Compilication )

 

    When the hawk came a few months later, the hen told him the truth. The hawk was so furious that he cursed the hen. “why didn't you tell me earlier? Now you'll always be scratching  the earth and I'll always be flying above to catch your children,"said the hawk. ( Resolution )
